Julianna Barwick's 2011 album The Magic Place was one of my favourite releases of the year so I had high hopes for the gig, and wasn't disappointed. Since it is mostly just Julianna's vocals, it was not a loud performance, and you can clearly hear clinking glasses and coughs. But it was a (kinda disappointingly) small and quiet audience and the recording turned out well.

I got to Irene's to hear most of Concrete Life from the doorway and regretted not recording them. They were pretty good. As for Sleepwalks.. I was outside for their set and missed it.
Oh and Irene's. You have the shittiest PA ever. The vocals on all these recordings are fucked.

First I've heard from Nebraska and I dig. Shame I missed the first bit of their set though: and that I couldn't see a damn thing from the doorway where I watched from.

Loma Prieta
So so so much better than the show a week earlier. Now with vocals too! Really loved this set along with every single person in the room. In fact, people went fucking crazy the entire time these guys were playing. It was pretty insane.

Raein
While the show at The Gasometer had much better sound than this one I really enjoyed this set more. Firstly, everyone didn't leave before they started. And secondly, the crampedness and hotness of Irene's really added to the vibe.

Meredith Music Festival @ Meredith Supernatural Amphitheatre (2011-12-09/10)

This weekend couldn't have come soon enough. I'd been counting it down since the lineup was released. So many great bands all at my favorite place.
We got to our camp around 10 and chilled the whole morning/afternoon. Actually forgot bands started at 4 so I missed a bit of King Gizzard which sucks. Anyway, I had an awesome time with our camp-crew. A fantastic bunch of people who I hope to see back there come March.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
Despite not really knowing these guys I enjoyed the set and thought it the perfect way to start the festival. It was fun, dancy, and suited the mood of the weekend. This is missing the first 15 or so minutes because to be honest... I'd arrived at camp at 10 and by 4 (when they were due to start) I was pretty drunk and just lost track of time.

Kurt Vile & The Violators
Everyone seemed to dislike this set and I'm not really sure why. I loved it. Granted, I was pretty drunk by this stage but even then it was just so relaxed and really suited the amphitheatre. The only thing I can think of is the quiet mix he/they got. At times they seemed to be drowned out by the chatter of the crowd. Luckily though I was near the speaker stack for most of this so you can't notice it much.
Also, for those with astute hearing you may notice a few changes in this recording. This is because I wasn't there for the first 4 minutes and because my talking ruined parts of this one. Enter Neeso (who also posts to this blog). He also recorded a few bands on the Friday night and I've used his recordings to patch mine up and create the best listening experience I could.

Explosions In The Sky
Wow! Been waiting for this one since I last saw them almost 4 years ago. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen and completely changed my appreciation for post-rock. I would love to have a recording of that one to listen to but it got lost in the big PC crash of 2008.
Anyway, flash forward to now and it was finally time to see Explosions again and they were just as fantastic as last time. The Supernatural Amphitheatre is such an ideal setting to see them play in and the sunset spot was just perfect. I can't say enough good things about this one. Download it and listen and appreciate it.

Barbariön
Oh man. They guys were just ridiculous. And not in a bad way at all. Just so fun and over the top. With a stage show that included flames, sparks, burning guitars and axes backed by screens of burning foetus' it was hard not to get drawn into this one. I spent the whole set in disbelief at how good it actually was. See this band! I don't care if you don't like the genre.. do yourself a favour and see them.

Future of The Left
To be honest I was a little late on the Future of The Left train. I have a few Mclusky albums but never really made the connection between the two until recently. Leading up to the festival Future were the one band I listened to most in anticipation so needless to say I was pretty excited for this one. As I rushed back to camp between Barbarion and Future to get drinks and have a quick catch up with my pals I missed the intro to the set. Well, to be honest I was using the he-pee when they started and my recording actually starts in there... luckily however Neeso was there to cover my ass :)
The set itself was awesome. Heaps of energy from the band and crowd and some pretty great singalongs. Falco's stage banter was a little reserved but was still on point.

After Future we hung out at camp for a bit so I missed all of Juiceboxxx but from what I heard at the campsite and from other people it wasn't all that great. Gang Gang Dance on the other hand were a group I didn't want to miss and as much as I hate to say it their set wasn't all that. Granted they had a fair bit of technical problems throughout most of it. The last 10-15 minutes kicked so much ass though. I wish I'd recorded them.
Harmonic 313 was also pretty awesome. I spent most of the set falling asleep though. It was a long day and I crashed as soon as my head hit the pillow

Saturday morning started off pretty slow. It was super hot in the tent so we ended up waking up about 9-9:30 and just sitting around for 4 hours waiting for Off!. In that time we heard the brass band, Oscar + Martin, The Rechords and Adalita from the campsite. I don't regret my decision to miss any of them. I felt like crap and was pretty tired from the night before. I tried to have a few morning beers to ease the hangover but it just made me worse. Anyway, after awesome hangout times and a few attempts to nap (far too hot) it was finally time for a little band from LA.

Off!
Around the camp grounds early Saturday morning there were a lot of Black Flag shirts. To be honest, I didn't think Off! had that big a fanbase over here. It doesn't surprise me that they do though because they're pretty awesome. A bit of a strange choice for the lineup but they pulled it off in the end in the 'Saturday early afternoon punk/hardcore timeslot'.
So yeah.. they came out and played a million songs in a little over half an hour. The entirety of First Four EP's and then 2 more I think. I'd have loved it if they played for the entire 45 minutes they were billed to but I'm pretty sure they've only got a few more songs. Should have done some Circle Jerks/Black Flag songs though. People would have lost their shit.
I would have loved to have gone to the sideshow the next day but I felt horrible and I'm pretty sure the setlist would have been the same. If they ever come back again I'll be there that's for sure.

After off we tried to have another nap again and in the 2.5 hours between them and Black Joe Lewis I think I got about an hours sleep. Really glad I did because I would have been wrecked come 3am or so...

Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears
To be honest I was 50/50 on seeing this set. It was only about 10 seconds before they started that I made up my mind to go down to the stage so needless to say this is one of those recordings that slowly fades in as I make my way over there. In the end I'm pretty happy with my choice because these guys rocked. They were just so much fun and turned out to be the feel good band of the weekend.
It was pretty funny when they were asking for weed because about 20 seconds later the fattest joint ever got lobbed onstage. Meredith is great like that. Surfin' Bird was also the best way ever to end their set. Everyone danced along to that.

Mudhoney
This one was really much better than I could hope for. And for a band like Mudhoney to get such a good response from the crowd really shows just how good they were. Plus you know.. the setlist was pretty big considering the 50 minute slot. Oh! and Keith Morris doing guest vocals on Fix Me was cool.
This recording starts off up at the toilets. I raised the volume for Suck You Dry as much as I could without ruining to try and bring it up to the level of the rest of the show but it's still a few decibels short. Also, towards the end of the set I put on a poncho to keep myself (and more importantly my gear) dry so that creates a tiny russell in parts. Other than that though it sounds great!

Cut Copy
As I wrote last time I saw these guys they put one a very fun show. It's always good to see a Melbourne band get the amphitheatre so pumped. Was good to see Blink and You'll Miss A Revolution in the set but I wish they played a few more they didn't back in May. But I guess it was a festival set so I didn't expect too much.
I'll tell you off the bat this recording isn't the best. I was late to the stage as I rushed back to camp to get my poncho then because it was raining throughout most of the set I was wearing it which made some rustling noise in parts. Also, you can here rain drops on the mics in parts as well. Then, towards the end the sound fades as I rush up to the toilet (I was busting...). Other than that though it's all clear. Take it for what it is I guess. A reasonable recording of a great set.

Grinderman
Was pretty excited for this one. I'd seen Grinderman at the start of the year for the first time and they were fantastic then and I'd been listening to that recording leading up to this and getting more excited each time. As it turns out, this would be the last time I'd get to see Grinderman as well as Nick Cave told us all that they were over at the conclusion of their set. I'm a bit bummed out about that but to their credit they went out with a bang. The set was fantastic! Only problem was that they didn't play every song they've written. Big sing alongs to Get It On and Kitchenette were pretty great. And No Pussy Blues was awesome too.

After Grinderman was the anticlimactic Lunar Eclipse. Cloud cover meant we couldn't see it but whatever. I was more excited for the Juan Pablo Family Hour. Just who were they you ask? Well; it seemed everyone had their own idea as to who it was. I'd heard rumours of a Nick Cave solo set, The Bad Seeds, The Presets, Girl Talk, The Avalanches playing a live show (would have been amazing!). You name it I heard the rumour. In the end it was (I think) one of the dudes from Yacht Club and one of the guys from The Avalanches doing a mashup set. I was pretty disappointed when it started but soon afterwards I got my boogie on and boy, did I get my boogie on!
After Juan Pablo we stuck around for Big Freedia who was equally as fantastic. So much booty shakin' going on.
I wanted to see Virgo Four and Tim Sweeney but I was just too buggered by that point and I needed the sleep.

On the Sunday I didn't see anyone which is a bummer. Was actually pretty keen on Frank Fairfield and Abbe May but camp life got the better of me. Ended up packing our gear pretty early and heading out around 12ish.

And that was it for another Meredith. Already counting down the days until the next one as it's my (second after Golden Plains) favorite weekend of the year. Seriously love that place.

Kurt Vile & The Violators @ Northcote Social Club (2011-12-05)

I hadn't listened much to Kurt Vile's records before this gig, but bought a ticket based on rave reviews of his live shows from people I trust, and I'm glad I did. I'm still not crazy about his albums but really loved this performance. There was an intensity, especially in such an intimate venue, and especially with the songs performed solo, that doesn't translate well to record for me. Anyone who was at the gig might notice this is missing the last song of the set, apologies, the mic cable came loose. What I did manage to get turned out well though!

Mono
So this one was pretty fantastic. Mono playing Holy Ground with a 23 piece orchestra was something I thought I wouldn't get a chance to see but Melbourne Festival made it happen. Really thankful for that. The performance is exactly how you'd expect if you've heard the album but seeing it live is something else. Much more powerful.
On a sour note. This pretty much marked the end of my battery box. Had to scrap the right channel because it was so staticy. Also, Melbourne festival should get rid of glass bottles. There's so many of them getting thrown in bins in this recording. Really takes away from it.

Dropkick Murphys
This set was just ridiculous. So much dancing was had by all and it seemed with the first few notes of every song everyone threw their beers in the air and lost their shit. I can say that its been a while since I've been part of such a passionate crowd. As for Dropkicks, well they were awesome. Played a billion songs including my favorite 7 or 8 from them which is great. But it's not hard when you play a mammoth set like they did.

I last saw Mike Noga when he (and band) opened for Band of Horses in the middle of 2010. I really enjoyed his set then but this one was something else. He should always play solo. His bogan banter is hilarious and not too dissimilar to his band mate Gareth Liddiard's when he plays solo.

Will Sheff
Not only does this top any Okkervil River show I've seen (4 or 5 now); this ranks up there as one of my favorite shows ever. It was just flawless. Will is just so good. I was a little unsure what the setlist would be like but I prayed like hell for The President's Dead to be on it. And my reaction when I peeked at his setlist on stage and I saw it was indescribable. I'd of been happy to see only that song and then go home. Little did I know that it wouldn't even be the song of the night. As it turned out For Real stole the show. I mean, I've always been a fan of the song but it was just so intense in this setting.
It was amazing to see Will in such a small setting and to hear all his solo arrangements of the Okkervil songs. I wish he would do more solo shows when they tour here.

Wow! Melbourne Music Week really put on a great show here.. not that they don't put on a bunch of great shows over the week, it's just this one really stood out. A great lineup in what turned out to be an amazing venue. With the exception of Wintercoats all the sets were recorded from the balcony with my microphones hanging off the edge. This not only minimises crowd noise but I feel it adds to the 'churchy' sound of the recording.

Wintercoats
Amazing. The Cathedral setting just suited him like you wouldn't believe. Despite being one of the shorter sets (song wise) I've seen him do this is probably up there as one of my favourites. Everything about it just worked so well.

Been waiting for this one for a while. It's almost two years since the EP was lauched and while I'd heard the entire album start to finish from my live recordings it wasn't quite the same as the finished product. Really glad to finally have a copy of the LP. It's fantastic!

I walked into the venue as Brat Farrar were finishing up the first of two twenty minutes sets they would play on the night. They were on sidestage opening up and then playing between The Nation Blue and Future of The Left who occupied the mainstage. I quite liked this format and I think it should happen more at The Corner. Anyway, since they only had 5 minutes left I didn't record the first set.

This was a fun set. Teri just lost her shit the whole time and jumped around the stage like some crazy bitch which was thoroughly entertaining. It was strange to see Omar so reserved playing a minor role. The whole set he stayed shyly at the back of the stage. Pretty much the whole of Sin Sin Sin got played and then some so I can't complain at all about the setlist. Wish I'd gone to the sideshow but I didn't realise I'd enjoy them as much as I did.

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez Group
I missed the show back in 2006 that Omar did with Damo Suzuki and I've been kicking myself ever since. I must have listened to that recording 30 or so times. Anyway, fast forward to a few months ago and to my surprise out of the blue this tour was announced. There was no way I'd miss it this time. Although I was a little disappointed that it was mostly Vato Negro material in reality I can't complain. Firstly because it kicked ass and secondly because how often does Omar Group tour here? Also, he should sing on more tracks.

$10 for this lineup. Can't beat that. Managed to get soundboard recordings of Old Skin, Loma Prieta and Raein. However, Raein's is pretty horrible so I couldn't use it. Loma Prieta's is great so I use it for the whole time it recorded (18 of 28 minutes) and Old Skin I used the whole set for. It was a weird and small venue to record in and I'm pretty happy with the results considering. I wish I'd been able to go on the balcony though...

Edison
Having come from work (and leaving 30 minutes early mind you) I only got there in time to catch the last little bit of Edison. I really enjoyed them... in fact, they ruled. Next time I'll get the whole set I promise.

Loma Prieta
These guys ruled. Absolutely ruled. I was pretty stoked to see they'd been added to the lineup less than 24 hours before the event. Thought they were only doing the later 2 shows.
It's a massive shame that the vocals were nonexistant for almost all of the set. This recording does it huge justice though because I was plugged into the soundboard and there was a still a feed coming through there (for the first 18 minutes at least) so there's some good sounding vocals for the majority. It's just a bummer they came out of their way for this, their first show in Australia only to play it without vocals. Regardless, they ruled and I can't wait to see them again.

Raein
Heaps of people left before Raein started which was weird but cool at the same time because it made the show more intimate I guess. Luckily the sound problems of Loma's set were fixed for this one.

Engine Three Seven @ Victoria Star (boat!), 02/01/12

So, Simon Wright, brother of Engine Three Seven's Jed, had a birthday. How did he decide to celebrate? By getting Engine Three Seven and a few other bands (including his own) to play a gig. On a boat. Though this isn't exactly a new concept, it was the first boat gig I've been to and holy shit, this sort of thing should happen so much more often. The fact that Engine Three Seven have become one of my favourite bands since moving to Melbourne meant that this gig was always going to be amazing, and it was. The boat ROCKED. So much fun was had; what a way to kick off the year. Beers, beautiful weather, a BOAT and Engine Three Seven rocking out like always.

The recording itself isn't that great. I suppose that's not surprising, given that boats are not exactly designed for loud rock bands to play in them. The space was pretty enclosed and you know, lots of people, lots of booze, lots of singing. But I'm uploading it anyway, pretty much entirely unedited. It was so much fun, and I think that's been captured quite well. Bit disappointed I missed recording Lady Luck, but you win some lose some I guess.

Well what can I say? After sleepmakeswaves' phenomenal show at the East Brunny earlier in the year, as soon as this show was announced I put it on the calendar and knew that it was going to take a most unfortunate set of circumstances to prevent me attending this. And yes, another fantastic show, although I was slightly disappointed by the fact that the setlist was exactly the same as last time (minus one (GREAT) song). But I had a chat to guitarist Otto Wicks-Green after the show and he explained that due to drummer Tim Adderley being very new to the band (this was only his second show), they decided to play it safe setlist-wise this time and mix it up a bit on tour next year. Which I look forward to immensely. Adderley seems like a very capable replacement for longterm drummer Will Smith; he clearly knew the material well and injected plenty of enthusiasm and his own interpretation to the sleepmakeswaves material. Although listening back, and from what I remember of the night, he played some bits a little too intensely and sort of overpowered the rest of the band, taking away from the subtle nature of the music. But yeah, he fits in well otherwise. It seemed a little strange that like last time the band played, there'd been some pretty intense things going on in my own life during the lead-up to the show, but I dunno, that kind of made the set even better. When this band is playing, you're able to totally forget whatever is happening in your own life and just immerse yourself in the epic riffs and song structure. Anyway. Great set. Can't wait till the 2012 tour. Oh, I should say that my friends and I were hanging up the back of the room and we weren't watching the stage, so I didn't have the recorder ready to go when the band started. So the first little bit of the first song is missing. But no biggie. Sound quality's a bit variable, which I attribute to me sitting down on the floor the whole night. Yep. It was that kind of gig. And also, to the idiot yelling things such as "TEN MORE SONGS!", how original. Please FOAD. Unfortunately he timed it while Alex Wilson was talking, so I guess I had to leave it in there.

Fucked Up @ The East Brunswick Club (2011-11-30)

So, this band called Foo Fighters are out here playing a bunch of stadium shows and as well as having Tenacious D support them they decide to ask Fucked Up to come out and open shows for them. A strange choice I think but one that I was happy with because I loved the idea of seeing them again: even if it was a 20 minute opening slot. However, rumours went around of a sideshow at the East Brunswick Club and I held out on getting a ticket to the Foo Fighters show. The rumours came true and they did do a sideshow and boy, what a show it was. Supports for the evening came from The Smith Street Band who were pretty fantastic. I got there with only a handful of songs left so I didn't get a chance to record them. I think they are opening for someone I'm seeing soon anyway so I'll be sure to catch them then.
I hung around the soundboard between sets waiting to ask the soundguy for a line out and coincidentally when I did Ben from Fucked Up was there and he was all; "yeah go ahead dude just forward a copy to us", so that was really cool. So as well as getting a soundboard I was free to set my mics up anywhere I wanted so I taped them to this big box thing at the soundboard which resulted in a great sounding audience recording with minimal interference. Coupled with the soundboard I'm super happy with how this one turned out. Only problem is the last two or three songs of the main set the soundboard vocals had this weird echo to them. Not that it's a big thing I thought I'd just give a heads up for when you listen back on it.

Fucked Up
To see Fucked Up play 3 times in a year has been pretty amazing. They were a band I thought would never come out here and much like any band who does once they are here they realise it's awesome and want to come back. And when (if) they do come back I'm pretty certain every person at this show will go and see them again. They were just that awesome. They seemed a little humbled at just how well they are received over here.
Anyway, with the new album out since last time I saw them I was expecting a pretty David Comes To Life heavy setlist and would have been happy with just that but they also played a bunch off The Chemistry of Modern Life as well as the one off Hidden World and a handful of 7" songs. Still no Two Snakes though but I won't let that bother me. The show was basically an hour of non stop music and I was pretty exhausted by the end of it. Haven't danced that much at a show in a while. So much fun!... did I mention these guys should come back soon?
Oh, and to the dude that grabbed Sandy's boob. Your a dick. What the fuck man?

I saw most of Ben Salter which wasn't really my thing. Then I caught the tail end of Tendrils who I actually really enjoyed. Would see them again that's for sure.
I enquired about a soundboard feed just before Gareth came on only to find that the guy doing sound was a guy I'd met before and is more than helpful with it so that turned out well. As a result this recording is fantastic! I coupled it with my audience feed (about 60% audience 40% soundboard) that I recorded from the top of the steps a little left of centre. Thanks again Nick for the feed.

I'm not sure what to write about this one. If you're a fan of Gareth you'll love it. As always his stage banter is equally as entertaining as watching him play. I was hoping for a few more off his solo album but I was actually really happy with Sixteen Straws. Wasn't expecting that one so it was a pleasant surprise and a great way to finish such a great set.

Portishead @ Harvest/The Gathering Festival, 12/11/2011

Well, here it is. I couldn't believe it earlier this year when the rumours began of a festival run by AJ (of Soundwave infamy) with Portishead as the headliner (amongst a healthy selection of other amazing bands). I couldn't believe it when the festival was actually announced, confirmed, and tickets were onsale. But now it's over, and here's this recording, and it appears that I actually did see Portishead play live in Australia for the first time in 14 years.

The set itself? Everything I expected from this band, and more. If I had just one complaint, it would be that they didn't play every single song they've ever released. What I'm saying is that some people would look at the setlist and say, "Oh, they didn't play (this song), what a shame", but come on (they probably could've played a bit more from their second album though). Portishead came to Australia, and really, they just fucking delivered. There is no way anyone can legitimately complain about this set. The recording itself is listenable, but not amazing. My friends and I were a fair way back in the crowd, and there was a bit of talking going on around us. But what can you do? Here it is. Portishead, live, amazing.

As for the rest of the day, this was my first outdoor festival with my recording gear, and for whatever reason I just wasn't really inspired to bother with it for the rest of the day. Don't get me wrong, there were some great performances that in hindsight it would have been nice to capture, but with all the wandering around and talking to friends and such that you get from a festival like this, I just couldn't be bothered to mess around with recording. Obviously, Portishead were a must though. I really hope this festival delivers again next year, because for a first-time festival in this country, it ticked pretty much all the boxes.

Royal Headache @ The Curtin Bandroom (2011-11-11)

Both these shows were recording pretty much dead centre in the venue. I had my second recorder plugged into the soundboard and used that to bring up the vocals and drums a bit but the sound guy did a really good job on the night so it's mostly my audience recording.

Royal Headache

Bright Eyes @ The HiFi (2011-11-10)

The first time Bright Eyes played in Melbourne was in 2005, and as good as it was, I left a little disappointed that the set list was almost entirely IWAIM songs. Having jumped on the bandwagon just after Fevers And Mirrors and being obsessed by the time Lifted came out, I was hoping for some songs from those albums. Turns out I had only to wait another 6 years to get the Bright Eyes gig of a lifetime. Last week at The HiFi Conor Oberst and his band delivered an exhaustive two and a quarter hour career spanning performance that surely was intended to please as many Melbourne Bright Eyes fans as possible. And I'm glad I recorded it! The crowd was understandably excited and talkative and so there is some noticeable chatter during quieter songs, but otherwise the recording turned out really well. Enjoy.

Anna Salen (AKA "The Super Anna Salen Brothers")
After getting a good response last year for their "Mario" theme, Daiv Morgan, Paul Risso and Shaun Scott decided to do it again this year, once again to great effect. It's great to have a recording of this - you'll hear plenty of Mario sound effects in the middle of their own songs, care of Shaun's triggers, and there's a couple of good covers of the theme music between songs. Also, watch out for a special guest drummer in Karate (Shaun played guitar). Dinner's On is fast becoming one of my favourite Anna songs, although I should say that the new (and amusingly titled) one they opened with at this show and the night before is IMMENSE.

The Khyber Belt
So for the uninitiated, The Khyber Belt are basically the closest thing Melbourne has to a supergroup. Vocals, Forbes McKail, formerly of Rook. Guitar, Tyson Fish, formerly of Rook. Guitar, Guy Shenfield, formerly of Bushido. Bass, James Livesy, formerly of Sleep Parade. Drums, Alex Dinic, formerly of Bushido. Rook and Bushido have broken up, and James isn't in Sleep Parade now, so it's great to see all these musicians still doing their thing in this band, and this was only their fifth show in total, due to the fact that Forbes lives in Brisbane so they can't play together very often. Anyway. The first time I saw them it was a bit like, "FUCK YEAH! ALL THESE GUYS, AND FORBES IS SINGING, HOW GOOD IS THIS!" But now... it's like the honeymoon is over. Don't get me wrong, they're still a very good band. And it is fucking awesome that Forbes is still using THAT VOICE. But... this band isn't Rook. I know it's wrong to compare a band to the bands that their members came from, but when you've got Forbes singing, and Tyson playing guitar, you can't help but make the comparison. Pretty much what I'm saying is that in terms of the songs, SO FAR, this band isn't living up to my expectations. But it was actually a pretty good performance on the night, and the EP, on sale for the first time on this evening, isn't bad. I definitely think there's some potential here, and if they can get their shit together, they could definitely be as good as Rook in the future.

Another high quality set, really the only way the Engine boys know how to play I think. Good to hear a BRAND newie in there (although it definitely sounds a bit rough; I think Casey's not even singing real words half the time) and Erasure getting its third consecutive airing. I think it's safe to say that one's back for good. Thank God! Anyway yeah, not much to say here. The recording starts straight away into their set because I was busy talking to mates and didn't realise they were so close to starting. Ah well. Also, contains lots of singing. My singing. I think I need to invest in my own magic hat or something, but goddammit I love Engine Three Seven!

I'd heard many good things about this Alcest band before but I never really got around to checking them out. Then they announced an Australian tour, so I thought I'd give them a long-overdue listen; turns out they're fucking awesome and I was really looking forward to this tour. I was especially glad that they announced this second show, as the first one clashed with another gig I absolutely had to attend. So here we go.

First up was Encircling Sea, a band I've seen live quite a lot over the past few years but that's OK, because they're usually pretty awesome. Still, the previous show had Nekrasov supporting; I would have rather seen him because yeah, Encircling Sea play quite often and Nekrasov barely plays at all, in fact I heard that it was going to be his last show ever. Anyway, this is about Encircling Sea, not Nekrasov. A friend of mine who's a bit more familiar with the band than I am, informs me that this set consisted of a new unreleased song at the start, and then a section of their Ecru piece at the end. I was contemplating just posting this as one solid file because it really did seem like one long jam (not that that's a bad thing), so thanks Garrett, now I can do something a little bit more accurate.

The inclusion of Heirs on the entirety of this tour was something I had no complaints with, as they're always a stunning live act and on this occasion they delivered yet again. Little disappointed they didn't bring out the projector like usual but I suppose they didn't want to upstage the headlining act or whatever. Anyway. It was a damn good performance, but I've been really surprised while tracking this to discover that they only played FIVE songs. I know that some of their songs are lengthy, but I didn't expect this. I guess there's a bit of difference between the studio and live versions of their material. Anyway, here they are. Very good set.

Alcest. Man, I had some high expectations for this show and they pretty much met them with great ease. They had a few sound problems though, or more accurately a recurring series of one major problem - vocals being way too quiet. It apparently happened onstage as well, with Neige asking to be turned up at one point, only to be told he was turned up as loud as possible. "Oh, OK then!" he replied, clearly a little bit disappointed. Anyway, other than that it was a beautiful show. Being that they have some lengthy songs, only nine in total were played but it didn't really feel like we missed out.

Well, it was The Butterfly Effect's "10 Years" celebratory tour, but strangely enough, there was no gig in the immediate vicinity of the Melbourne CBD. Luckily some friends were attending this gig, so I thought I'd take this opportunity to finally cross TBE off the list. Supports were fellow Queenslanders Helm, and by the sounds of it, two other no-namers from around the Frankston area. My friend did his research and said we needn't bother turning up early for bad Karnivool rip-offs, so we didn't.

A very good friend of mine has been talking up this Queensland band for quite a long time, and I ended up seeing them at the Sonic Forge festival late last year and I was suitably impressed. Since then I've actually managed to listen to and become quite familiar with their material (again thanks to aforementioned good friend) and I was very much looking forward to seeing what they'd do tonight. As can probably be expected, there weren't many in the crowd getting into it but the Gold Coast boys were genuinely making an effort with their performance, and I, and the friends that I was there with, really enjoyed them. When I first heard their cover of Great Southern Land I thought, "Oh, another one of those "let's do a totally unexpected cover in a progressive rock/metal style"", but I definitely appreciate it a lot more now. It went down very well live and Lucas definitely sings it well. Great set all around really; in fact in my opinion they were the only thing that didn't make this night a complete waste of time and money. Can't wait to see them again soon; one to keep an eye on over the next few years I think.

The Butterfly Effect
Oh my. I'd never seen this band before, as I got into them a little later than most, and did so kind of because I had to, being a fan of all the other bands in the scene, such as Cog, Karnivool, Full Scale, etc. I do really enjoy some of their stuff, but they've never really struck a major chord with me. I was hoping a solid live performance with a setlist packed full of their songs I really liked would properly convert me. I don't know what I was expecting from these guys, but it wasn't this. I was genuinely disappointed. Where to start? Clint's vocals were quite off the mark at times, and tellingly he was very often directing his microphone at the crowd to sing along. I'm not going to say it's a BAD thing that Clint (and indeed the others in the band) were really energetic onstage, but I don't think the way they were flailing around really suits their kind of music, as I've never really seen them as a "heavy" band at all, except for maybe their earlier material. Speaking of that, they decided to play an entirely chronological setlist, starting with a couple of songs from their first EP and then moving through a few tunes off each album, ending with the most recent. It was an interesting decision to make, but ultimately I don't think it worked, as all the heavier material was in the first part of the set and by the time they were closing with Worlds on Fire (one of their best songs), it seemed like people had very little patience or energy for a sprawling seven-minute long prog-rock song. Mixing it up would have definitely been a much better idea. It was also disappointing not to hear any new material, and there were a few other album tracks (read, not just the usual "popular" anthems) I would have liked to hear. I thought I was just not enjoying it because we were a little way back in the crowd and I was tired but everyone whom I saw on the night (some of whom were in the "pit") agreed that they have played better shows in the past. So yeah. If you're a TBE fan you might enjoy downloading this, and I for one am willing to give them another chance (because I KNOW they can't be this bad all the time), but yes, it certainly did not live up to my expectations.

A short but sweet instore by Dick Diver and one of the more enjoyable shows I've seen them do. I remember just before Arks Up came out hearing Walk For Room acoustic on the radio and commenting on how awesome an acoustic show would be by these guys and this is probably the closest I will get to it. Steph is overseas (I think) so the show is just the 3 boys playing a selection of new songs without drums. It worked really well and I'd like to see a whole show like that another time. However, I'd much rather see a show with Steph any time.
Walk For Room has a little intro here that is a new addition and it works really well. And all the new album tracks are played great too. Can't wait for the launch :)

Well then, here it is. The first ever performance at Alcatraz, a new weekly event taking place at St Kilda's Greyhound Hotel. I've lived in St Kilda for almost four years and there's never been anything on here that I've been interested in, but now with Crutey taking it over once a week over the next couple of months, I'm sure I'll be making it a bit of a regular thing.

Anyway, to I Am Duckeye. For those that don't know, they're a band with a couple of dudes from Sydonia (guitarist Sam and drummer Sean). Except unlike Sydonia, this band is NOT at all serious. They're as much a comedy act as they are a band. I really don't know how to describe them, except to say that you should definitely go and see them if you like stoner rock with dick jokes and bad choreography. Little bit of crowd noise from me and my friends but ah well, it's not too bad. And there was absolutely no way I was going to remove the onstage banter.

Counter-Revolution @ Festival Hall (2011-09-30)

Oh god. Counter-Revolution... a bit of a shambles of a festival when you consider the calibre of acts originally planed for the 'proper' festival but in the end it actually turned out to be an enjoyable day. Saw a bunch of bands I enjoyed and because it didn't sell out there was heaps of room to chill and dance.
While I actually saw a lot more bands on the day I had some recording issues (my iRiver was being a dick) which prevented me from saving anything before dinnertime so all I have to share with you is the last run of bands of the night. To be fair though, they were the best though (with the exception of maybe Funeral For A Friend and Story of The Year). Maybe next time though?
Since I'm pretty weird about security at Festival Hall I didn't take my battery box to this show which results in slightly lower quality recordings but considering the circumstances and the fact the sound in the venue was complete shit I'm pretty happy with the results I got.

Yellowcard
So. About 4 years ago when Yellowcard last visited Australia I got to see them do an acoustic set as part of a myspace secret show with Sum 41. Due to a bit of bad luck their gear got left in Singapore and they did an acoustic set instead of their original planned electric set. And while I really enjoyed it I always wanted to see a proper set from them. Fast forward 4 years and here it is finally. Now, I'm not the biggest Yellowcard fan any more and I haven't listened to anything by them after the album that came after Ocean Avenue but it was really good to go back to when I was 17-18 and just enjoy them for what they are: a fun pop-punk band. Would I see them again when they come back (like they say they will)? I'm not sure. I'll have to listen to this a few more times and decide once that time comes.

All in all I had a fun time at Counter-Revolution even though it seemed a little forced by a few of the bands I saw. It turned from a full metal/punk/emo festival into a double stage pop-punk extravaganza which was cool. Even though I know it probably won't be back next year I still have hopes that AJ decides to try again to put on something similar to break the 12 month gap between Soundwaves.

Mushroom Giant @ Evelyn Hotel, 24/09/2011

So, I was pretty hungover from attending another gig (and subsequent shenanigans) the night before and I got to the Evelyn about ten minutes before Mushroom Giant started their set. THANK GOODNESS. This band always impresses me live, even if they are only playing support/mini-festival slots where they don't get nearly enough time to play! Anyway, this was another really good set from the Melbourne four-piece. I've said it before and I'll say it again; I could not be more happy with their decision to ditch their vocalist and become an instrumental band again, because this is where they absolutely shine. Unfortunately there was quite a bit of talking among the audience, which is especially noticeable because this is a band with lots of quiet moments. Also, there's a song I've never heard before at the end of the set, so I asked guitarist David Charlton if it was a new song. He informed me that it's actually a very old song that they never released, but it will probably be on their next album. And speaking of that next album... where is it?! I am really looking forward to hearing where they'll go next. So yeah, all in all, a very good set. Nice to hear Pigeons again, and also I did laugh at Simon's little blunder regarding a single of theirs that sold out years ago.

The other bands on the bill were Quiet Child and The Khyber Belt, unfortunately I didn't record either. Quiet Child's first few songs were a little too slow and lacking in the requisite "zing" required to wake me up after the previous night, so I had to leave to go and get some caffeine. As for The Khyber Belt, it was nearly 12am by the time they got onstage, and the crowd was way too sparse and I would've felt rather awkward with microphones on. They're a good band, though.

Collarbones @ R.A.O.B G.A.B Buffalo Club (2011-09-23)

So, this dude I kind of know started up his own management company thing and all 3 of these bands are on his roster. Anyway, he came down from Sydney and put on this show and it ruled. The venue was fantastic and the bands were all fantastic. I have nothing but good things to say about the whole evening.
I brought my second iRiver along to record from the soundboard but once again I didn't have the right input. Luckily the soundguy (who's name escapes me now) did so I got to record all 3 sets from there along with my normal setup. The result is 3 pretty fantastic recordings which I'm more than happy with. Next time I see him I'll be sure to shout him a beer for being so helpful and cool with everything I did on the night.

James... you really outdid yourself this time. The Weeknd Cover was really really fantastic and Forest of Lovers is so different to the first time I saw it. It's as if it's a new song now. Really looking forward to the show at The Forum with Mono.

Russian Circles
Since this was an end of tour show and it was at a smaller venue I was kind of expecting the band to do something special for it. You know.. maybe pull out an obscure song or play a super long set. Unfortunately they didn't and it was standard fare. Luckily however, Russian Circles version of standard fare is fuckin' awesome so this show was still great. A shorter set than the other one I saw at The Corner Hotel but I actually enjoyed this one more. I had an awesome spot on the step right next to the soundboard and could see perfectly. As a result the sound on this one is a little better.
There was a guitar problem during Harper Lewis that stopped the show for over 5 minutes but I edited it out (you don't want to hear them plugging stuff in and messing around with amps) so it flows much better. Other than that there were no hassles.
Oh. And for the second time in a row I was foiled by the soundboard as I didn't have the right plugs for it. Got to get me some 1/4 inch plugs for my iRiver.

A month prior to this show I didn't even know who Russian Circles were. A friend asked me if I was going to this show and when I asked what they sounded like he said to think of Laura (a Melbourne post-rock band) but more metalish. I was intrigued and got Station and listened to it non-stop for a week before I got Geneva and listened to that non-stop. By the time the show came around I was more than a little excited for it.
Knowing the band were open taping and fine with pretty much whatever, I took along a second set of gear to record from the soundboard. I asked the guy and he said yeah but the board was old and he wasn't sure it would have the right input. Sadly it didn't so I just had to go with my audience mics. It turned out pretty well in the end but I can't help but think how much better it could have been. Oh well, seeing them again a few days after this show anyway.
Anyway, the show was awesome. Everything I expected and more. 309 gets me pretty excited for the new album and the last 2 tracks made me get the first album. For a 3 piece it amazed me the sound they could create on stage. Very impressive.

So I was sitting at home looking for something to do on Friday night and after checking a few potential gig Facebook events, I was surprised to find out that some good friends of mine were playing a gig at Pony. They were only the opening act and so didn't really advertise it much but I decided to head along anyway, as they're always a lot of fun to see live, and I had nothing better to do. I might be biased because they're friends of mine, but I think they're a really good live band. And you should go and see them one day. They're called Sheriff, and here's their brief but awesome performance from a typically loose Friday at Pony. I thought the sound in the venue was pretty average but it's actually turned out alright. As you can hear Jimi explaining before What You Want, they shot a film clip for that song a couple of days later, and without a doubt it was one of the most fun things I have ever been involved with. Can't wait to see the finished product.

There were other bands on the lineup of course, but I was only really interested in recording Chico Flash. And then by the time they got onstage it was really late and I was a little bit drunk and I couldn't be bothered. In hindsight I do regret that. It was a really interesting performance featuring a guest appearance from some saxophone player known as the Blowfisch. It was all completely improvised and some bits didn't quite work, but on the whole it sounded pretty good. Or maybe that was just because it was nearly 2 in the morning and my sense of judgement about such things was a little bit skewed. Anyway.

Absolute Boys
This is the first full set I've seen by these guys and it was just awesome. I really need to see them more often.
There was a bit of a problem with the guitar amp during and after the first song. It wasn't loud enough so the guys and sound dude swapped it for one of the Tax guys one. It lasted about 3 minutes and I edited it out along with a few more quiet parts between songs.

Prior to his appearance that night at The Toff (also recorded) Jason Simon plays a short instore at Polyester Records to a very appreciative crowd of around 20-25 people. I really enjoyed it and it was a nice little prelude to the main show later that evening.
I was right up the front by the speaker so there's no interference on this recording other than a bit of rustling at the start as I clipped my mics to my pocket.

Dead Letter Circus @ Hi Fi Bar and Ballroom (24/08/2011)

In the past 12 months I have seen Dead Letter Circus five times, and I think this will be the last for quite a while. I don’t mean to sound too negative but this is probably the performance I enjoyed the least out of the eight times I’ve seen them play. They’re a great band and all but I think they could put a bit more of an effort into ensuring that fans who see them multiple times aren’t subjected to damn near identical performances each time. That and the fact that I don’t really like the Hi Fi Bar as a venue and the support bands were average, meant that this particular DLC gig wasn’t anything to write home about.

The supports were Wolves and Closure in Moscow. You know what’s worse than having a support band that you expect to be bad and they are? You guessed it – having a support band that you expect to be good, but they’re not. Wolves started out pretty bland but their last few songs were marginally more interesting. Also, they were a classic case of “band that has a slightly unusual instrument (in this case a violin) but has it way too low in the mix to actually make a real difference”. I guess this might not have been the band’s fault. And it improved toward the end of the set. I’m willing to give these guys another crack as they showed some promise. Closure in Moscow really threw me – I’d heard comparisons to The Mars Volta thrown around and I was looking forward to what they’d do. They seemed pretty cool – until the singer opened his mouth. The rest of the band is actually very talented and interesting to watch, but I found myself wishing I could just listen to instrumental versions of their songs, not have some half-whiny emo vocals over the top of it. And what the fuck was he wearing?! I’m glad I didn’t record these guys. So Wolves and Closure in Moscow failed to score points, which was really disappointing as I’ve usually seen some really good bands support DLC – Sydonia, Rook, Black Devil Yard Boss, [Me] and Floating Me, namely. And just to rub it in, the rest of the tour has Jericco on the bill.

Anyway, so DLC came on and did their thing and that was pretty enjoyable, except, like I said, not much setlist variation. Moving around one or two songs does not constitute rotation. And they’ve even dropped The Drum this time around, which is a little disappointing. Oh, right, they played Tremors for the first time in ages. That was actually quite enjoyable, although it seemed like way too many in the crowd didn’t know what it was, which always annoys me at gigs. Towards the end of the set, it looked like they weren’t going to play Alien like they had on most other shows on this tour. That’s cool, I thought. I’ve seen it before, and they’ll probably do something else cool that they didn’t do elsewhere. Oh, an unplanned drum solo! NICE! ...Until I got home and looked at the setlist from the Geelong show. Alien AND a drum solo! Yeah. We actually got one less song (or piece I guess... a drum solo’s not really a song) than Geelong. Great. Also listening back to the recording, perhaps it wasn’t as spontaneous as I thought. Kim says “Did someone say drum solo?” but all I can hear is requests for Alien... hmm. It was quite a good drum solo though! The rest of the set was pretty standard stuff; This is the Warning as a closer is getting a little over-done. Someone from Closure in Moscow did the floor tom, but on the fifth tour since the album, that’s really lost its impact. I think they need to do something a bit more creative with it, instead of just sticking to the EXACT same rhythm that’s on the CD. What’s the point in that? Anyway. I know it sounds like I didn’t enjoy this gig at all, but I genuinely did. It was just the same-old same-old and I won’t be going to see them again until their tour announcement declares that they’ll play new material. Nevertheless, it’s a reasonable recording of a band I’ve always wanted to have a performance of.

Went along to this show to see James play as I hadn't seen him in a while and I try to make an effort to catch him at least once every 6 months or so.
This is probably the best I've seen him play to be honest. I know I write it every time I do one of these reviews but he gets better and better with each show. A bunch of new songs in this one from the upcoming EP which should be fantastic. The No Scrubs cover was really good too and I'm glad I finally got to see it. Now I just need to convince him to play Lovefool next time I see him...
Listening back on this I can't wait to see him play The Forum with Mono in October and actually play in a cathedral the month after with HTRK. Those are looking to be some pretty good shows.

First things first. A super big thank you to the following people for making this happen: Liam, Zaid, Julee, Cheryl, Shane, and Alex who all chipped in and payed for my flights to Adelaide and back so I could record this one. The show you ask? Better than Sydney in (almost) every way:
1. The band seemed happier to be there and in turn they played better.
2. Juan and Deantoni especially on this just dominated.
3. The mix was better.
4. Super chilled atmosphere.
5. No recording issues!

Only downer was that it was a little shorter but I'm just nitpicking.

I recorded the show with two sets of mics and recorders to avoid any mishap like the Sydney show. Both shows are available in FLAC with the better source also available as MP3. Source 2 is really for collectors. It's a good recording but no where near as good as the other one.

The Mars Volta @ Enmore Theatre (2011-08-03)

It's that time again that comes around every 18 months or so. The Mars Volta are back in Australia. As is becoming a habit I'm travelling to see more than one show and first off the ranks this time around is Sydney at the wonderful Enmore Theatre. Now, when I booked tickets to my shows I forgot about flight costs involved. Enter the fine people at The Comatorium forum. I started a thread asking for donations to cover flight expenses to Sydney and Adelaide and they responded in amazing fashion. In fact, the very first donation I got was from a guy named José Vouillamoz from Switzerland who single handedly donated enough to cover the Sydney flight. I can't express my thanks to him enough for that and I hope he enjoys this recording.
On to the show.
The new songs. Oh my god. Pretty much the direction I've been waiting The Mars Volta to travel for a while now and by far my favorite material since Amputechture era. Deantoni is a beast on the drums and gels with the band much better than the last two drummers I feel. Cedric was pretty chatty for once and seemed to be in a great mood. He did some cool stuff which you'll hear on the recording.

Now for some bad news. For some reason unknown to me my iRiver 'froze' on 1:52 after I hit record. This has never happened before and it's lucky I checked during Aegis and noticed it to quickly fix it. Unfortunately this means the first 5 or so minutes of the recording are lost. Other than that though there were no dramas. The issues I've been having in my left channel didn't occur during the show which was a huge relief. On the whole I'm proud of this recording.

Alright, here's a late one, but a good one. One certainly can't accuse Australia of having a lack of high-quality post-rock bands around at the moment, and on this chilly winter's evening, four amazing acts did their thing at the East Brunswick Club. The headliners were well-respected Sydney four-piece sleepmakeswaves, launching their highly-anticipated debut album - something that their small but loyal and steadily increasing fanbase have been excited about for quite a long time now. They were supported by a great collection of likeminded acts from around the Melbourne scene, namely This Is Your Captain Speaking, These Hands Could Separate the Sky, and Lunaire.

So Lunaire kicked things off; I'm surprised to find that these guys are from Warrnambool, as it isn't exactly the kind of area you'd expect post-rock bands to come from. Then again, these guys proved to be a little more uptempo than the other bands on show tonight; they delved into My Bloody Valentine-esque shoegaze on some numbers, complete with the constant whammy bar strumming action that Kevin Shields was so known for. All in all, Lunaire's sound was a pretty enjoyable start to the evening, albeit slightly unfocused. They seem like a pretty young band who haven't really found "their" sound so to speak, but what was on show tonight was pretty promising. I do regret not recording them. Oh, and they were giving away their demo for free, which is always nice. Well worth checking out, and I think/hope we'll see a lot more of them in 2012.

sleepmakeswaves... wow, what can I say? I remember this whole night like it was yesterday. I remember being so excited to hear these tracks for the first time (though it was the album launch, the album itself was only available the day before, so yeah, I hadn't heard it yet). I remember being even more excited during the week when Tim Charles from Ne Obliviscaris announced that he would appear with the band during their set to reprise his amazing violin parts on their immortal song one day you will teach me to let go of my fears, which I, being a newish fan of the band, had never had the opportunity to witness before. But most significantly, I remember hearing some really sad news from two friends who rocked up just before sleepmakeswaves got onstage, and that cast a really emotional shadow over the whole evening. And then when they played one day..., fuck. Such an intense set from the Sydney post-rock gods; probably my favourite Aussie gig of the year. I really must apologise for my inebriated friends conversing during some of the quiet bits.

Dick Diver
Man it's been a while since I saw Dick Diver. Over half a year in fact. I knew there would be a few new songs in this set but I wasn't expecting 4 of them. Seagulls isn't new but from what I gather it's the name of the track I used to call Penny-farthing. Also, Interstate Forever was pretty rad.

This is the second year running I've attended the mini festival held inside the Melbourne Town Hall which is part of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival.

Overall I think I enjoyed last years slightly more but it was still a great event.

Most of the recordings are complete sets, some are not. Yep.
