Another solid show from Mammal. As with the show the week prior I was still a little sick during this so I couldn't get into it as much as I'd like. Still, I had a great time. I got a spot first row in front of Pete because I wanted to try my hand at recording some more videos. I'm really glad I did too because during think my line-in to my i-river got disconnected and I lost the second half of the song. Luckily that was one of the songs I was videoing on my camera so I patched it with the audio from that. As a result I'm only missing the start of Clear Enough?
The setlist is a carbon copy of the show the week prior when you swap Slaves for Push & Shove. Both songs are awesome and both I haven't seen much before so they were very welcome.
Nagasaki had a few hiccups which was a bit entertaining. And the inciting jam with extra drummer was awesome too. I love getting guest appearances at Mammal shows.

Mammal @ The Corner Hotel (2009-07-03)

Oh man... I really didn't feel well at all and wanted to leave throughout most of this set. I would have aswell if it hadn’t been for the bouncer in front of me who seemed to know how shit I was feeling and to try and make things better for me. He did this by telling the bitch jumping into me every 5 seconds to stop.. when she didn’t he sent her away. By getting me a bottle of water when he saw me in discomfort and coughing a bit. And by keeping the general crowd around me pretty calm. Thanks heaps bouncer guy. You are seriously the best venue staff I’ve ever seen.
Now, the performance…. AWESOME! I think this is the tightest I’ve seen Mammal play. They sounded spot on. The new intro jam is pretty rocking. And it was great to see Push and Shove again. I think they should start to rotate an older song into every set. Would make things VERY interesting.
Tap dancing at a Mammal show works unbelievably well by the way. The most entertaining special guest appearance I’ve ever seen. Period. Just awesome.
Will be seeing them at least once (maybe twice) again on this tour. Hope that shows as good as this one.

Sydonia were the only band I recorded on the night sorry. I did catch the second half of Newborns set and they were pretty good. I wouldn't mind checking them out again sometime in the future.

Firstly. Thanks to Sean for putting me on the guest list so I could record the show/his band. Coolest guy :)

Secondly. Wow! I am so impressed with Sydonia’s live show. It is phenomenal the sound they can create with what they have and I am consistently blown away by them. Quickly they are already emerging as one of my favourite bands to see live. I'm also liking the surprise new tracks in the set. The new album is already shaping up to be as good, if not better than the first. And that is saying a lot.

Anyway, I can’t wait to see these guys open for Mammal in a few weeks. Hopefully my microphone issues are fixed by then.

This was recorded pretty much as close to the left speaker stack as I could get. The first minute and a bit are in mono and there is a little crackling throughout. This was pretty much the end of my mics.

Mammal @ Yah Yah's (2009-05-05)

Oh my god!! The best Mammal show I’ve seen by far. Very good mix of songs due to the ‘song out of a hat’ thing they had going which I strongly strongly insist they do at every show from now on. For the first time in a while the show didn't feel linear and didn’t follow the ‘safe’ setlist which has been of late: which made every song played exciting. Getting to hear Dionysian and Push & Shove finally was great too. And I’m still loving The Tempo and The Groove. Can’t wait until they kick out some other new songs too.
Irwin’s addition to Maker was pretty cool. It’s always great getting guests in on songs. And I think he nailed it. The Inciting rap by Zeke was awesome too.
However, my favorite part of the set went something like this:

Zane busts into Think.. awesome style.

Mammal @ Chelsea Function Centre (2009-04-17)

I hadn’t seen Mammal in a while and even so I wasn’t really overly excited for this show. I knew it was going to be a stock setlist and sure enough it was. Only real suprise was the new song which I didn’t think I’d get. I think it saved the show for me. It’s a really good song and I’m looking forward to hearing more of it. Also, the end jam of Pinata was pretty rad too. I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t really like the material off The Majority. Living In Sin is the best song and they rarely do it live anymore.
Don’t get me wrong the guys played really well. They always do. I just think I’m getting over them a little.
Bad sides of the night included:
- kids who don’t know how to dance.
- kids who don’t know how to sing.
- MGMT - Kids (seriously, why play this at a rock show between sets?)
Highlights included:
- some 15 year old fingerbangin his g/f in the corner.
- the security guard eating a banana.

Mammal @ Mynt Lounge (2008-12-26)

I had been looking forward to this show after missing the Boxing Day show the year before. I had really high expectations thinking we were going to get a special show. I was disappointed in that aspect :( but you know.. Mammal shows are always fun anyway right?
I'm super happy they played Slaves again. Havn’t seen that since the first time I saw them.
Was also different as this was the first time I didn’t have to worry about taping as my gear was at the back of the room. So for once I got to get up close and dance and sing/yell along. Was a very different feeling.
The crowd were great, proving how good they were during the 'technicals'. A bit rowdy at times but hey, it’s a rock show.
It was also nice meeting some of the peeps from The Aural Underground forum. You were all very nice. I’m sorry if I seemed a little off on the night. I’m always funny around new people. I look forward to catching up again next show.

This was recorded from directly behind the soundboard. I had my gear set up on a shelf about 7ft from the ground facing the speaker stacks.

I remember at the time I didn't really enjoy this show as much as previous Mammal shows. Listening back it sounds just as great as they all do. I guess to me it felt to 'generic' by then and didn't have that wow factor of the early shows. However, it's a great show as they all were by the band.

Full Scale DVD Launch @ Hi-Fi Bar and Ballroom (2008-10-04)

Featuring .hinge, Rook, Sydonia, Engine Three Seven, Rincon, Tim McMillan and Ezekiel Ox.

A night full of Melbourne bands and Full Scale covers which had me anticipating Full Scale coming onstage to do one final song together. Sadly, it didn't happen. Other than that small setback the night and all bands were great.


Engine Three Seven
I listened back to this one trying to get into it but I just really couldn’t… other than Have It All that is, that song is wicked rad. I don’t know. I didn’t even enjoy the Full Scale cover in this set.
The sound isn’t the best but that’s because the mix on the night was pretty poor.
That said, I would probably check these guys out again at a headlining show and see what they really are all about. Being the 2nd band (out of 6?) really didn’t do them justice.

Sydonia
I remember after this set I couldn’t really describe what I had just seen. Sydonia live are just so powerful what with the triple percussion and all. A really solid set by the guys who I’d previously not heard of before. I should really get into these guys on CD and catch them when they play near me soon.

Tim McMillan
I was one of the few people who knew that Tim McMillan would be making an appearance at the Full Scale DVD launch only because my friend Trent would be playing with them. He described the music as ‘Acoustic Viking Metal’ so I had no idea what to expect. With that, I was blown away by how much I enjoyed this short set. Tim’s guitar skills are superb. His little drum solo still makes me laugh.
Loved the Mario and Master of Puppets covers.
I’ve been meaning to catch another of his shows but always seem to have something else on :( Play in Frankston please Tim so I can see you? Thank you.

Rook
I remember on the night I hadn’t heard Rook before but a few people had told me good things about them. I thought they were amazing. Best band of the night for me. Forbes just has an amazing voice and with such good music to back it you can't go wrong.

Ezekiel Ox
On a night full of Full Scale covers and loud sets this was a bit of a black sheep performance. It wasn't really planned at all. Zeke just came up, had a few words, played then left.
I'm pretty lucky that I was just recording between sets to catch this song as by the time I would have set up it would have finished otherwise.
It's a good song. Written a week before Zeke and Full Scale left L.A. to come home after the band didn't work over there.

I’ve never really thought much of this band. I saw them open for Cog a while back and was uninterested. I gave their myspace page a few listenings to as well. They just don’t do it for me. Musically I think they are good, however, the singer irritates me. I wouldn’t go out of my way to see them again.
Saying that it was a pretty solid show. Party Political was obviously the standout song of the set and as close to me seeing Full Scale as I will ever come... :(

Another amazing show by the band. Filled with ‘technicals’ which I feel add to the show a lot. Crowd requested Hollywood and we got it which is pretty rare. I’ve not known Mammal to take requests before. The crowd were loving it and so was I... nuff said.

This one was recorded from pretty much the centre of the room. Mics were clipped to my hat about 6 ft from the ground.

Mammal @ Rare Records (2008-08-30)

This was an instore performance of the new Mammal album The Majority. Only people who pre-ordered the CD were allowed entry. There was about 70 people there. They played the new album front to back and even though I’d had it a few days and listened to it over a dozen times some of the new songs still took me by surprise. My favorite being Living In Sin whcih I think translates perfectly live. Clear Enough? is always a favorite too and surprisingly I really dug Burn Out at this show where as I’d normally dismiss it.
Zero Infinity was not played by the band; but over the house PA system instead.
That said it was both really nice and weird seeing Mammal at such an intimate gig... and during daylight hours too.

I recorded this kind of haphazardly as I was too conscious about being caught. From memory I had the mics clipped to my jumper somewhere but I'm not sure.
