So, this could be potentially Mammals last gig and to tell you the truth. I don't fell they went out on a high. Don't get me wrong they put on a good show. But it just wasn't a headliners set. Which it should have been. And as a result, it has left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth for Mammal.As always, it was good to hear Push & Shove live again... and the intro Jam has evolved a little

I took my girlfriend along to this show. It was her first Mammal experience and I think she enjoyed it which is great! :)

Mammal @ The Pelly Bar (2009-07-11)

Another solid show from Mammal. As with the show the week prior I was still a little sick during this so I couldn't get into it as much as I'd like. Still, I had a great time. I got a spot first row in front of Pete because I wanted to try my hand at recording some more videos. I'm really glad I did too because during think my line-in to my i-river got disconnected and I lost the second half of the song. Luckily that was one of the songs I was videoing on my camera so I patched it with the audio from that. As a result I'm only missing the start of Clear Enough?
The setlist is a carbon copy of the show the week prior when you swap Slaves for Push & Shove. Both songs are awesome and both I haven't seen much before so they were very welcome.
Nagasaki had a few hiccups which was a bit entertaining. And the inciting jam with extra drummer was awesome too. I love getting guest appearances at Mammal shows.

Mammal @ The Corner Hotel (2009-07-03)

Oh man... I really didn't feel well at all and wanted to leave throughout most of this set. I would have aswell if it hadn’t been for the bouncer in front of me who seemed to know how shit I was feeling and to try and make things better for me. He did this by telling the bitch jumping into me every 5 seconds to stop.. when she didn’t he sent her away. By getting me a bottle of water when he saw me in discomfort and coughing a bit. And by keeping the general crowd around me pretty calm. Thanks heaps bouncer guy. You are seriously the best venue staff I’ve ever seen.
Now, the performance…. AWESOME! I think this is the tightest I’ve seen Mammal play. They sounded spot on. The new intro jam is pretty rocking. And it was great to see Push and Shove again. I think they should start to rotate an older song into every set. Would make things VERY interesting.
Tap dancing at a Mammal show works unbelievably well by the way. The most entertaining special guest appearance I’ve ever seen. Period. Just awesome.
Will be seeing them at least once (maybe twice) again on this tour. Hope that shows as good as this one.

Mammal @ Yah Yah's (2009-05-05)

Oh my god!! The best Mammal show I’ve seen by far. Very good mix of songs due to the ‘song out of a hat’ thing they had going which I strongly strongly insist they do at every show from now on. For the first time in a while the show didn't feel linear and didn’t follow the ‘safe’ setlist which has been of late: which made every song played exciting. Getting to hear Dionysian and Push & Shove finally was great too. And I’m still loving The Tempo and The Groove. Can’t wait until they kick out some other new songs too.
Irwin’s addition to Maker was pretty cool. It’s always great getting guests in on songs. And I think he nailed it. The Inciting rap by Zeke was awesome too.
However, my favorite part of the set went something like this:

Zane busts into Think.. awesome style.

Mammal @ Chelsea Function Centre (2009-04-17)

I hadn’t seen Mammal in a while and even so I wasn’t really overly excited for this show. I knew it was going to be a stock setlist and sure enough it was. Only real suprise was the new song which I didn’t think I’d get. I think it saved the show for me. It’s a really good song and I’m looking forward to hearing more of it. Also, the end jam of Pinata was pretty rad too. I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t really like the material off The Majority. Living In Sin is the best song and they rarely do it live anymore.
Don’t get me wrong the guys played really well. They always do. I just think I’m getting over them a little.
Bad sides of the night included:
- kids who don’t know how to dance.
- kids who don’t know how to sing.
- MGMT - Kids (seriously, why play this at a rock show between sets?)
Highlights included:
- some 15 year old fingerbangin his g/f in the corner.
- the security guard eating a banana.

Mammal @ Mynt Lounge (2008-12-26)

I had been looking forward to this show after missing the Boxing Day show the year before. I had really high expectations thinking we were going to get a special show. I was disappointed in that aspect :( but you know.. Mammal shows are always fun anyway right?
I'm super happy they played Slaves again. Havn’t seen that since the first time I saw them.
Was also different as this was the first time I didn’t have to worry about taping as my gear was at the back of the room. So for once I got to get up close and dance and sing/yell along. Was a very different feeling.
The crowd were great, proving how good they were during the 'technicals'. A bit rowdy at times but hey, it’s a rock show.
It was also nice meeting some of the peeps from The Aural Underground forum. You were all very nice. I’m sorry if I seemed a little off on the night. I’m always funny around new people. I look forward to catching up again next show.

This was recorded from directly behind the soundboard. I had my gear set up on a shelf about 7ft from the ground facing the speaker stacks.

I remember at the time I didn't really enjoy this show as much as previous Mammal shows. Listening back it sounds just as great as they all do. I guess to me it felt to 'generic' by then and didn't have that wow factor of the early shows. However, it's a great show as they all were by the band.

Another amazing show by the band. Filled with ‘technicals’ which I feel add to the show a lot. Crowd requested Hollywood and we got it which is pretty rare. I’ve not known Mammal to take requests before. The crowd were loving it and so was I... nuff said.

This one was recorded from pretty much the centre of the room. Mics were clipped to my hat about 6 ft from the ground.

Mammal @ Rare Records (2008-08-30)

This was an instore performance of the new Mammal album The Majority. Only people who pre-ordered the CD were allowed entry. There was about 70 people there. They played the new album front to back and even though I’d had it a few days and listened to it over a dozen times some of the new songs still took me by surprise. My favorite being Living In Sin whcih I think translates perfectly live. Clear Enough? is always a favorite too and surprisingly I really dug Burn Out at this show where as I’d normally dismiss it.
Zero Infinity was not played by the band; but over the house PA system instead.
That said it was both really nice and weird seeing Mammal at such an intimate gig... and during daylight hours too.

I recorded this kind of haphazardly as I was too conscious about being caught. From memory I had the mics clipped to my jumper somewhere but I'm not sure.

My favorite out of all the times I’ve seen Mammal. The Majority (pun not intended) of the songs were new and still very fresh to me and the old songs just got such a good response and were played so well.
Nagasaki is still the best opener song and it really did get everyone into it right from the get go. Welcome To The Jungle being played in Inciting for the first time was amazing: one of the best things they have done I think. I love it.

It’s hard to think it’s been almost a year since this gig. I still remember the night pretty vividly. This is the longest set (at the time) I’ve seen Mammal play and the only time I’ve ever seen them do an encore. Inciting clocks in at over 10 minutes which is great.
Also this, as far as I’m aware, is the only known recording of Space and Time. Still upset they didn’t include it on the album but I’m not complaining. I imagine it will show up on some future release.

Melbourne Big Day Out @ Flemington Racecourse (2008-01-28)

Although I saw several other awesome bands on the day these are the only 5 I recorded. I kind of regret not recording Bjork... a lot.

Oh man. I really wasn't expecting this show to be as good as it was but it was amazing. Totally sold me on Mammal being a great live band who know how to put on a show.
The tent that they were playing in was overflowing and the crowd just loved this set. Nothing better than a supporting hometown.
Nagasaki should always be the opener for Mammal. Just that first note is so... powerful. And the think on this is probably my favorite I've seen.

Arcade Fire
Looking back this was probably my favorite performance of Big Day Out. It was the middle of a very hot day and for the hour that these guys played for I got to sit on a barrier and just relax. Around me there weren't too many fans but a lot had converted by the end of the set.
I love the setlist to this show. Every song is tops and it just flows so well. Stage banter is at a minimum but the talk of Australian TV is pretty funny.

BattlesBattles are just one of those bands that when seen live, they draw you in. No sooner had I gotten to the stage to see them and the half hour was up and I was stuck standing there dazed like a fool.
I love these guys. I wish they would play Melbourne again soon. And I can’t wait to hear some new songs.
The first 10-15 minutes of this set are missing as I was watching Arcade Fire at another stage. Sorry.

Rage Against The Machine
Man, this was awesome. I still get a little giddy at the intro to this and buildup to Testify.. and once it kicks in: wow! Every single person inside the D barrier was jumping. As well as everyone I could see outside the D barrier. We had been waiting a long time for Rage to come back and they delivered.
The sound on this is iffy as I was jumping around having an awesome time. Take it or leave it.

Ahh... the first of what was to be many many Mammal shows and this still sticks in my mind as one of the best. Being a relatively new Mammal fan I had only heard the songs on the EP. So almost the entire show was new to me. I loved every second of it.
Be sure to listen in on either Maker or Inciting for the drunk bitch who harassed me as I wouldn't give her the drumstick I caught.
